Client: Department in South West hospital.
Challenge: To make a desk adjustable for consultants to use microscopes.
The Consultants were spending most of their workday at a computer. The previous setup included a fixed-height desk and a standard office chair and relied on microscope adjustments which caused strain on her back and neck and left her feeling fatigued. They sought a more ergonomic solution that would adapt to her work habits and provide greater flexibility.
The Problem
The fixed-height desk and non-ergonomic chair didn’t allow her to alternate between sitting and standing or achieve an optimal posture. The prolonged periods of sitting caused discomfort, while the inability to adjust her setup for different tasks limited her productivity and creative output.
Our Solution
After assessing the work area workspace and needs, we recommended a height-adjustable desk paired with an semi-bespoke chair. Together, these solutions provided the adaptability and comfort they required:
- Height-Adjustable Desk: Allowed to switch seamlessly between sitting and standing positions, reducing strain and promoting better circulation.
- Ergonomic Chair: Included adjustable lumbar support, seat height, and armrests to ensure proper alignment and comfort during seated work.
- Custom Workspace Setup: Ensured the desk and chair were correctly configured to match Emily’s height and work habits.
We also provided guidance on ergonomic best practices, such as monitor placement with some having monitor arms and recommended standing-to-sitting ratios.
The Outcome
The combination of the height-adjustable desk and ergonomic chair revolutionized workflow.after the first set was delivered 3 years ago we have supplied 12 more into the department and several consultants have ordered the desk for home office use.
